Sending short text files to colleagues

I routinely write text files having nonbreaking spaces (e.g., 35 mm), curly “quotes,” and sometimes – as surrounding this phrase – en dashes. On my own machine (Mac), it is my custom to save such files in UTF‑8 (no BOM) character code and with “UNIX” [nl, that is, lf] line ends suitable for modern Mac OS. UTF‑8 is set …

Rogers 404; Bell as NSA

Access www.rogers.com with cookies disabled and get 404 – PAGE NOT FOUND. I’m serious. This is supposed to be a technology company? And Bell: A business plan that includes (or perhaps is centered on) selling our TV show watching history, telephone call details, and web browsing history – including search terms? They’re kidding, right? No, I’m afraid not. Let’s …

Consumer NTSC RF modulators

I would be very very interested to hear from anyone in possession of archaic technical details about channel 3/channel 4 RF NTSC modulators of the sort found in consumer VCRs. Specifically: Have you any idea what the RF carrier levels and/or tolerances might be? On an NTSC broadcast transmitter, ‑286 mV (i.e., ‑40 IRE) would produce …

Replace FrameMaker with InDesign?

Here’s why I’ll find it difficult (or impossible) to replace FrameMaker (call it “Frame”) with InDesign. Frame implements the concept of an anchored frame (I would prefer to call it a tethered frame). The frame can contain text, imported images, graphic elements – anything, really. InDesign has various kinds of boxes, but InDesign seems to …

Safari 6.1 on 10.7.5: “PlugInProcess”

I’m still on Mac OS 10.7.5 (“Lion”). Two or three days ago I accepted Software Update…’s offer to update Safari to 6.1. Since then, I frequently (many dozens of times a day) get a dialog box that pops up then immediately dismisses itself 50 or 100 milliseconds later. Once the dialog stuck around just long enough for me to get a quick peek: …

Microphone threads

I’m fairly naïve concerning audio, but I’m learning. A microphones that is intended for handheld use can be inserted into a clip that mounts to a desk stand, floor stand, boom, etc. The mic clip typically has a threaded hole; the desk stand, floor stand, boom, etc. typically has a threaded rod. I haven’t managed to locate any standards for mounting …

Fonts on Mac (and Win)

I would very much like to hear from a font expert. I would like to understand how naming works. I understand that a font file has a filename, and there are many names stored within the font, and all of these don’t necessarily match. I’d like to understand what name is displayed in what applications (for example, Illustrator) and the …
